Goa is divided into two districts: North and South Goa. North Goa has the state capital, Panaji, the former capital of Old Goa, with its interesting churches and cathedrals and a string of beaches. Margao is the main town in South Goa and is reminiscent of the Portuguese colonial past.
Panaji is one of India’s smallest state capitals. People pass through Panaji on their way to Old Goa or to the beaches, but it is a town worth visiting.

Today, Goa offers the best examples of portuguese colonial architecture in India. There are many churches -they are still being used- some museums and great palaces. Old Goa is probably the most popular day trip for all the beach bums looking for a bit of culture when they get tired of the beaches, so you will find quite some fellow travellers here. Panim also offers some great colonial mansions refurbished lately. Do not forget to visit these buildings.
