Solar Dos Colacos Mansion is located between Old Goa and Panjim . The river Mandovi Flows on the left side of the heritage home. Probably this is the only World Heritage Mansion that is facing the river. The Mansion provides panoramic views of islands and historical churches of Old Goa. The architecture of the mansion is Baroque style. The mansion has an impressive facade and carved scenes on a side of the dining room depict incidents from the Ramayana. A private chapel is located at the mansion.
Goan mansions reflect a dozen historical upheavals. But more than anything they reflect the arrival of the Portuguese in 1510 and their stay in Goa till 1961. The Goan craftsmen however worked their mischievous artistry to sneak into Christian idolatry their own primal cult figures. Nazario Colaco, who inhabited the house after 1890 was an artist and craftsman. Evidence of his creativity is visible all around the house. For example the floor of the entire ballroom being built in wood of 16 different types. The mansion has other interesting features such as the intricately carved Goan furniture, chandeliers, mirrors and scenes from epic Ramayana. The private chapel houses the idol of Our lady of Rosary. A visit to this house will liven up different prevailing trends of different times.
