Overview
In 1973 Archeology & Museum unit was set up in the Department of Archives in Goa and thereafter a small Museum was opened for public on 29th Sept 1977 in a rented building at St. Inez. After construction of the present building the museum was shifted to this new museum complex at Patto which was inaugurated by the President of India on 18th June 1996.
This large, roomy museum in a rather forlorn area near the kadamba bus stand, has dozen or so galleries featuring Christan art, Hindu and Jain sculpture and bronzes, and paintings from all over India. The collection is gradually expanding interesting exhibits include an elaborately carved 16th century table used in the Goa Inquisition, a pair of huge rotary lottery machines containing thousands of wooden balls (the first lottery drawn was in 1947) and a large wooden chariot used in the Hindu fairs
during 18th century.
