On the hill side above Panji is the place Altino. A huge and imposing building built in 1893. The archbishop came to reside in Panjim in the 20th century. He initially laid claim to reside in Cabo Raj Niwas, the promonotory that looks out over the confluence of river Mandovi and Zuari. Today, Althino is most prestigious places in goa to stay in, the Pope stayed here during his visit to Goa in 1999.
