Overview

Domnicans were the first missionaries sent to India by the Portuguses. They were chaplains of the fleet brrought by the conquering Portuguese naval general Alfonso de Albuquereque. Engineers Julio Simao and Ambrosio Argueiro designed Se Cathedral (1562 - 1619), a Manueline with Corinthian style of architecture.

The unusually west-facing cathedral with its Tuscan exterior had square towers in the Manueline style flanking the 98 ft high facade. One surviving tower houses a golden bell that was cast in Cuncolim, a village in Salcet Taluka, in the 17th century.

The Corinthian interior has lofty pillars dividing the 250-ft long central nave from the side aisle. Of its 15 alters, those dedicated to Our lady of Hope, Our lady of Angish and Our Lady of Three Needs and grand alter dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria are noteworthy. the ornate main altar has carved frames with depiction of the life of St Catherine and magnificent crucfix. The Chapel of the Blessed Scarament and of the cross of Miracles have exquisite filigree work on the screens.
