Overview
Afonso de Albuquerque built the original mud structure to commemorate his victory on November 24, 1510. A few years later, stone chapel replaced the thatched structure, and a new altar was installed in 1550. The inscribed stone that was added during the rebuilding states that Afonso de Albuquerque actually entered the city at this spot, and hence it is belied that the chapel is built on what used to be the main gate of the Muslim city. The chapel of St Catherine was built in laterite. The chapel remains empty and is rarely open to visitors.
