Dedicated to the Infant Jesus, this church was elevated to the status of minor basilica in 1946, and today ranks as the most important church in Old Goa. It houses the relics of Goa's patron saint, Francis Xavier.
It was built in 1594, in a Italian Renaissance with baroque style of architecture. The design of basilica was insired by the now destroyed Church of St. Paul. It was built by two priests, Diogo de Borba and Minguel az in 1541, and dedicated to the saint in 1543.
The Three storied facade of the Basilica, one of the richest in Goa, has intricately carved basalt embellishments. Ionic, Doric and Corinthian columns depict the use of classical orders, in a true Renaissance style.
The tomb of St Francis Xavier assembled within the north transept of the basilica in 1698, was made over ten years by the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Batista Foggini. It was a present from the last Medici, the Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III.
