Overview

Old Goa, a strong religious and political centre druing Portuguese rule, was where the first few votives, commisioned by Afonso dr Albuquere, were built. Soon missionaries from various religious orders encouraged by the Portuguese goverment erected their own convent, with an attached church.
By the onset of 17th centuary, there was a vertible explosion of building activity in Old Goa. Italian churches on the lineof the Italian baroque architecture of Rome, giving rise to monuments that had a dramatic impact on the evolution of various forms of art forms, like architecture, sculpture and painting, as they spread forms of Manueline, Renaissance and Baroque styles.
By the 18th centuary Old Goa was hit by epidemics and by the mid 19th centuary, it fell to ruin. Despite the depredation, over the years, a hostile tropical climate and a general disgrard and lack of maintenance, a handful of monumens still exist as testimony to former grandeur.
